How Does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

Mesenchymal stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the ability to differentiate into functional cells such as intestinal cells, nerve cells, ligament, tendon, and muscle. Once inside the body, the MSC’s respond to cytokine signaling from injured cells. MSC’s migrate to areas of inflammation and tissue injury and initiate healing and repair. For example, in cases of asthma they migrate to the lungs and in IBD, they migrate to the colon. There, the stem cells secrete cytokines and growth factors which assist in the repair process.

How viable are the stem cells? The FDA recently passed a regulation requiring stem cell manufacturers to document the viablity. Before that regulation, patients may have received a product that had very low viablity. If clinics are processing their own stem cells, outside of the FDA requirements, viablity will be difficult to quantify and prove to the patient since it was not produced by an FDA regulated lab. In conclusion, if your treatment does not contain highly viable cells, it will not be very effective, and you may need more treatments.
